Making Mistakes

A few months ago I went crazy taking pictures of NY with my iPhone.

During one of my iPhone expeditions I also had my SLR with me and was jumping back and forth between cameras…bad idea.

I made a major setting mistake with my SLR and my photos came out a very cool blue which I thought was a brilliant mistake until I took a closer look.

So I spent some time in the digital darkroom with the images…

I’m not thrilled with the color but I keep looking at that wide angle composition. Not bad.

Subject No. 2

As Subject No. 1 sleeps 18 hours a day she isn’t always available to shoot.

However Subject No. 2, the view from my window, is not only available at all hours, it never looks the same.

The only time I can’t shoot out the window is during UN week when the sharpshooters on top of the UN have just as good a view of me as I do of them.

What I love most about these shots is I don’t use a tripod or a flash and am usually holding my breath to keep the camera still for a very long 1/4 of a second.

Funny how that works.

Wave Hill

I don’t often leave New York but last Sunday I visited Wave Hill to see my friend Dan Peyton’s cyanotype, called Spring Tree. Dan’s image (the most beautiful in the exhibit) is part of a traveling exhibition called Propagating Eden, featuring modern and historical techniques of nature printing in botany and art.

If you have never visited Wave Hill, I highly recommend a visit.

Wave Hill is a 28-acre public garden and cultural center in the Bronx with grounds overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades.

It is one of the most beautiful spots in New York City and easy to reach by public transportation.

The current exhibition with Dan’s cyanotype will be on display through July 25, 2010.

I hope you will visit my friend’s exhibit and discover Wave Hill, possibly New York’s most beautiful natural landscape.

Food & Photo Exhibition

My favorite Murray Hill breakfast-lunch-brunch cafe DELECTICA is now featuring eleven of my travel and food photos.

Located on the edge of Murray Hill at 564 3rd Avenue between 37th and 38th Street, Delectica is a small cafe with a devoted neighborhood and business clientele.

Open seven days a week, I love Delectica for their freshly prepared entrée salads with a sophisticated selection of baked salmon, Moroccan couscous, baked cauliflower, roasted vegetables and more. The outside seating, sandwiches as the Oven Baked Salmon (avocado, tomato, arugula and spicy mayo) and their Isreali Breakfast (two eggs or omelette served with a chopped Isreali salad, avocado, an assortment of sliced cheeses, whipped cream cheese and bread, with butter and jam, and choice of a small coffee or freshly squeezed orange juice) keep customers coming back for more.

Magnolia’s Falling

The flowers have started to fall off the magnolia trees in Tudor City Greens.

But before they started to fall…

I went back for a few more visits.

Signs of Spring

Some weeks I’m completely challenged about what to post and then a miracle occurs and I find inspiration. Many people call this the creative process, I often call it a three letter word.

But it’s Spring!

And Spring is a great time to photograph, mainly because your fingers don’t turn blue or fall off from holding a camera in frigid temperatures (I had some painful moments this past winter).

But with warmer weather it’s not only easier to have your camera out, there is so much to shoot.

For the past two weeks I have been following the blooming plant life in Tudor City and yes a few rainy days (because we had those too) in Bryant Park.

As you can see my camera and I are very happy Spring has finally sprung.

I’m sure you are too…

Visual Communication…

I’m in constant communication with friends in France, we email weekly to keep up with everything going on in our lives. It fills the gap between seeing each other twice a year.

My friends write in French and I respond in English. On occasion there is an effort to switch but I love hearing in their own words what’s going.

However, in the past two weeks I have become slightly obsessed with sending them pictures from my iPhone with a short title (some in English, some in French) instead of emails.

These images sum up a moment, they know where I am, what I’m experiencing and can enjoy the moment with me.

It’s a visual break that transports them to New York. I smile every time I hit send.

These iPhone images continue to surprise me. Whether shooting or editing right in the phone I can’t get enough.

I hope these images offer everyone a small visual break… or maybe another reason to run to Apple and buy an iPhone.
