Last week I left the city for two days. I traveled upstate NY for the (un)workshop, a one day photography workshop, organized and taught by Rachel Durik of Savor Photography.

In one short day Rachel covered photography A to Z. She is not only an excellent photographer but a wonderful teacher who is willing to share her knowledge and experience with her students.

Another day would have made the (un)workshop perfect or maybe it was my need for more fresh air and a relaxing environment.

A big thanks to Rachel for a fantastic (un)workshop but an even bigger thanks to my parents who trusted me with their car (scary considering I can’t remember the last time I drove a vehicle with four wheels) and offered me points to stay at a local hotel.

I’m not sure I would have done the trip without their help and I’m so glad I did!

Batter Up

I watched nephew No. 1 play baseball Saturday afternoon.

Well I wasn’t really watching, I was listening to the parents support their kids and the coach (who my brother advised was having a quiet day) scream at the team.

It was a real suburban experience.

But more importantly I was also photographing. Not a lot but maybe enough to get myself a job photographing suburban kid sports.

Nephew No. 2 promises to sell my services in exchange for some chocolate.

And in case you are wondering, yes my nephew’s team won.

Green & Pink

With the recent rains new flowers are blooming and Tudor City Greens have become very green.

However, my iPhone and are thankful that the rain has stopped and the sun is finally shining again.

The lush green colors are beautiful.

And there are also a few pinks and not just in the flowers.

Promoting The Arts

If you haven’t yet visited cafe Delectica in Murray Hill or Wave Hill in the Bronx this is a reminder to make a date on your calendar to support and promote your friends in the arts.

Cyanotype Spring Tree, by Dan Peyton

Delectica is now featuring eleven of my travel and food images and if you bring the original post to the cafe (click this link for original post) the cafe will offer you a complimentary soda, lemonade or ice tea with any sandwich or salad entree.

And through July 25th, 2010 the exhibition Propagating Eden at Wave Hill, the public garden and cultural center, is featuring my friend Dan Peyton’s beautiful cyanotype Spring Time.

The perfect Saturday or Sunday itinerary…a visit to Delectica for breakfast or an early lunch, followed by a walk to Grand Central to catch the 1:20pm train to Riverdale for an afternoon at Wave Hill. On weekends take advantage of Metro North’s city ticket just $3.25 each way.

Magnolia’s Falling

Signs of Spring

Some weeks I’m completely challenged about what to post and then a miracle occurs and I find inspiration. Many people call this the creative process, I often call it a three letter word.

But it’s Spring!

And Spring is a great time to photograph, mainly because your fingers don’t turn blue or fall off from holding a camera in frigid temperatures (I had some painful moments this past winter).

But with warmer weather it’s not only easier to have your camera out, there is so much to shoot.

For the past two weeks I have been following the blooming plant life in Tudor City and yes a few rainy days (because we had those too) in Bryant Park.

As you can see my camera and I are very happy Spring has finally sprung.

I’m sure you are too…

More Backyard Travel with My iPhone

“I think I need an iPhone!”

My response…

Visual Communication…

I’m in constant communication with friends in France, we email weekly to keep up with everything going on in our lives. It fills the gap between seeing each other twice a year.

My friends write in French and I respond in English. On occasion there is an effort to switch but I love hearing in their own words what’s going.

However, in the past two weeks I have become slightly obsessed with sending them pictures from my iPhone with a short title (some in English, some in French) instead of emails.

These images sum up a moment, they know where I am, what I’m experiencing and can enjoy the moment with me.

It’s a visual break that transports them to New York. I smile every time I hit send.

These iPhone images continue to surprise me. Whether shooting or editing right in the phone I can’t get enough.

I hope these images offer everyone a small visual break… or maybe another reason to run to Apple and buy an iPhone.
